Sealant Compatibilities for Vanceva Laminated

An objective of this program was to develop information on a variety of sealant products that might be used in conjunction with Saflex® or Vanceva™ brand interlayers for laminated glass. Sealant products from five generic groups were chosen for evaluation. One or more commercial products from each were tested. Some sealant groups had less damaging effects on the laminate edge than others. Also, within the groups, some individual sealant products affected the edge les than others. The five groups examined in this study were -

  • Acrylics
  • Polyurethanes
  • Silicones
  • Butyls
  • Polysulfides

Sealants were tested for compatibility when applied to the laminated edge, in direct contact with the interlayer and then exposed to specific accelerated weathering conditions. The data should be used for comparative evaluations only. Extrapolation to field applications cannot be guaranteed.

Test Results

Solutia’s study indicates that the sealants listed in this report have the potential to be successfully used in contact with the Saflex and Vanceva interlayers for laminated glass in properly designed and installed systems. For systems where edge defects must be minimized, Table 1 can be used to compare the relative potential for the specific sealant products listed to interact with the interlayers in laminated glass.

Conclusions

A comprehensive understanding of the detailed mechanisms of edge defect formation was not within the scope of this study. However, it is likely that the observed defects are the result of one or more of several possible mechanisms -

  • Products released during sealant cure can adversely affect interlayers. This was seen from results of the polysulfides that release water and various plasticizers, along with silicones, which release acetic acid, ammonia, alcohols or amines with subsequent bubble formation caused by vaporization of organic volatiles.
  • The presence of plasticizers, solvents or other ingredients can potentially diffuse into the interlayer resulting in defects.
  • Sealants in which Saflex and Vanceva interlayer plasticizers are soluble can cause leaching of the plasticizers from the interlayer edge into the sealant.
  • Moisture vapor migration through the sealants can propagate delamination.
