How to Specify Vanceva™ Laminated Glass

A Vanceva Design formulation code is an identification number for a particular color. One to four sheets of interlayer are typically used for the construction of the laminated glass. Since the recommended maximum number of interlayers is four, each color composite has been assigned a four digit number. The thickness of each interlayer is .015”. When specifying the Vanceva Design formulation code, it is important to consider the order of the code numbers. Because only four interlayers are recommended for use, the finished product may differ in color from one side of the glass to the other, especially when one of the translucent whites are a part of the over all make up. Color numbers should be specified in the order they appear from the outside of the building looking in or from the preferred viewing side.

The following are examples:

1.) The product required is color number 5789. This formulation code is red in appearance. The thickness of the laminated glass required is ¼” nominal thickness.

The specification would be as follows:
1/8 inch clear float annealed - Vanceva Design color 5789, 0.060” interlayer – 1/8 inch clear float annealed.

The break down of this design formulation is as follows from the outside of the building looking in.:

  • 1/8” clear float annealed
  • .015” Ruby Red color 5
  • .015” Evening Shadow - color 7
  • .015” Golden Light - color 8
  • .015” Arctic Snow = color 9
  • 1/8” clear float annealed

In our example above, this would show the red color from the outside of the building. When inside the building looking out, the glass would be more frost color red.

2.) The number 0 represents a clear .015” interlayer. If the chosen design color is an orange color, and the requirements are a .060” interlayer and the thickness of the laminated is glass is ¼” nominal thickness; the design formulation code would be 0045 and the make up would be as follows:

  • 1/8” clear float annealed
  • .015” Clear - color 0
  • .015” Clear - color 0
  • .015” Sahara Sun - Color 4
  • .015” Ruby Red - Color 5
  • 1/8” clear float annealed

Not all interlayers are required to be .060”. Depending on the application and building codes, a thinner interlayer such as .030” or .045” is all that may be required. For this reason it is important to include the required interlayer thickness following the Design formulation code for color. Please check with the building codes in your area for CAT I or Cat II requirements.
